Atlantea came to Johanson Boatworks in the spring of 2014 for extensive repairs following a fall which affected the hull, decks, interior cabinetry and spar.
Port side: The outer skin and damaged balsa were removed, the inner laminate was repaired as necessary and new balsa was vacuum bagged into the hull. The outer skin was re-laminated, and the area was faired w/ Awlgrip Awlfair. Awlgrip “Flag Blue” paint was applied to the surface for a high quality finish.
Interior: The galley cabinetry and fixtures were removed and the bulkheads were rebuilt and re-glassed to the hull. The counters, cabinetry and entire galley were completely rebuilt and reinstalled. The cabin sole was removed for mast step inspection and the grid-work in that area was re-glassed to the hull. Some of the grid-work showed pre-existing de-lamination and this damage was addressed by re-glassing and fabricating a custom pan on the mast step to divert water coming down the mast into the bilge. The cabin soles were then stripped, sanded, and refinished with gloss varnish. In addition all of the interior woodwork including the companionway was cleaned, oiled, or varnished to give the interior wood a fresh look.
Spar: A new section was purchased and spliced to the existing spar and once repaired the entire spar was sprayed with an Awlgrip “White” finish.
Decks: A crack in the deck was repaired with fiberglass from underneath and gelcoat was applied on deck. The exterior woodwork was stripped, sanded, and a Cetol gloss finish was applied. New stainless dorades were installed as well as a new custom anchor locker with a new Lewmar windlass and saltwater wash-down.
